Your Life and Your EDC

If you carry a gun for self-defense or really any sort of weapon, you should without a doubt invest in serious training to become proficient with it. That is to say: you need to be prepared to take a life or cause great bodily harm in order to protect yourself or others.

Statistically, most of us will fortunately never have to use any sort of force in a potentially deadly encounter, and frankly, that’s a statistic I’m thankful for. But even if the math tips the odds in our favor, it’s always best practice to be prepared. After all, why wear your seatbelt if statistically speaking you aren’t likely to need it? Simple: the potential for disaster without that safety measure is exponentially higher without it, so it’s work the effort.

Speaking of math, the one other category that we can and should be prepared for can be lumped into one very large category: a medical emergency. From a simple cut or scrape to a gunshot wound or amputation, one should be prepared to help provide potentially life saving measures to themselves or others at any given time.

One of the best ways to be ready for medical emergencies is to take classroom instruction. It’s easy, and usually pretty affordable. In some cases, you might be able to come by it free if there’s a community CPR class or basic first aid class available.

For more advanced treatments of severe injuries, you’ll have to combine higher level training with some sort of equipment. And here in lies my ultimate point: if you carry a weapon, you should carry a small trauma kit.

We could go on for several series about what to carry, but in general just follow yours CAB’s (ABC’s are out.) Circulation, Airway, and Breathing. Carry what you need to address these issues, and you’ll be good to go. Don’t want to build your own? Here’s what I carry:

Go on now, try you some of that ITs Tactical EDC kit. It’s good stuff. We’ll cover more on EDC kits soon, including how to build your own, what you need, and where to carry it!
